an inconvenient truth and other things

Wednesday, July 5th, 2006

i forgot, but i wanted to write about the movie that i saw this past weekend. it was the al gore documentary on global warming. one of my in-laws saw it and said that the world is going to end. i saw it and had mixed feelings. i left the movie with mixed feelings. i had feelings of hope; that we have the power to change and reverse what we’ve done. at the same time, given that humans are sometimes so short sighted, will we take the necessary actions to reverse what we’ve done?

guess which countries have benefited and contributed the most to global warming? uh, yeah, the industrialized ones. the kyoto accord was ratified by god knows how many developing and developed nations. we are one of two developed nations who have refused backing it up. the reason for it is that george w said that it’s going to hurt the economy.

i’ve pulled up some stuff from a bbc article that i found:

“The Kyoto accord was designed to limit the gas emissions blamed by some scientists for global warming, but Mr Bush says such restrictions will harm the US economy.”

” The widespread international condemnation of President Bush’s decision has left the US looking increasingly isolated.”

“European Commission President Romano Prodi said it was hard to understand how the US could abandon efforts to tackle one of the biggest challenges of global sustainability.”

“”If one wants to be a world leader, one must know how to look after the entire Earth and not only American industry,” he told Italy’s La Republicca newspaper. “

Kyoto accord
Targets ‘carbon-rich’ gases

Commits 38 industrialized countries to emissions cut of 5.2% by 2010

Developing nations excluded from emission quotas

“Developing nations are included in the treaty, but are excluded from emission quotas on economic grounds. This failure to demand emission quotas from developing nations is one of the main objections raised by the Bush administration to the Kyoto accord.”

man… bush sucks ass. he objects to not demanding emissions quotas from developing nations??!!!?? hello! the US’ total CO2 emission surpasses that of the total emission of  developing countries. also, the US benefited from ruining the environment to grow it’s economy, why refuse that same benefit to developing nations? it looks like a double standard. it stinks like a double standard. it sounds like a double standard… so it must be. bush sucks ass. like, major ass.

oooh gotta go. i have my career counselor appointment in 40 mins and i have to change.

i just finished watching france beat portugal in the world cup semifinals. sucks that i missed the only goal of the game, but i guess it was a penalty kick anyway, so how exciting can that be.

so about the career counselor. i’m glad that i made the appointment and i’m glad that i did some “getting to know me” things before meeting with her. i think that although we have to start with the basic steps, we are still on the faster track now then if i started with her before doing all the “self discovery.”

there are two steps. they are self assessment and job search. the first step is the one that takes the most time. i already have a homework assignments. yippy!
