hello? … can anyone understand me?

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

have you ever been in a situation where you were invited as a guest and you sit there wondering how long a spider has been living in the corner of the room? a gathering where you don’t understand anything (language) so you read and re-read and read and re-read and read and re-read anything that will keep you occupied as you slowly die and wonder what you’ve done to deserve such an evening? well, it’s happened to me twice in paris and all with similar people. i can usually be left alone in a party. even with my limited — uh-hum — very limited french, i can get by, because i don’t have a shy personality. thank god for that… but i’ve noticed that in such smaller intimate settings with young kids … let’s say 23 or so, i find that it’s more difficult as they are not mature enough to come out of themselves to be considerate to their guests. i’ve done fine with people in their late 20’s …. intimate or large gathering.

i’ve had three instances where this has happened to me in the last two visits to france. i think that it’s because i’m trying to meet more people as i am now able to at least say that i’ve taken some french lessons and that i will understand you if ‘you talk shit about me’ in french.

again, i have found more and more compassion for people who find it hard to speak english for whatever reason in the states.
