joyeux saint valentin

today is valentine’s day here in france. it seems that it’s as commercialized here as it is in the states. flowers are being purchased and there’s love in the air. in fact, it’s such a BIG holiday here that there’s EVEN a city named after St. Valentin.
this past monday, one of my brazilian classmates told me that she had a boyfriend - she was to go out with a french policeman this past friday evening. well, i guess she ended up kissing him because she said she had a boyfriend the next monday! i told her not to take it too seriously because there is no such thing as ‘dating’ in france. they don’t do what we americans do…. they don’t ‘go out’ with different boys at different times and then decide later… they actually date one person at a time and “break up” with them either that night or the next week or the next day even. in my classmate’s situation, she broke up with him 4 days later. this left her sans valentine on valentine’s day!
