support help for depression

Friday, March 16th, 2007

i’ve been reading other people’s posts on depression and i’m trying to reach out to some and perhaps share my experience or things that i’ve learned about depression, taking control of my emotions, seeing things a different way, empathizing with my S2BX… etc.

this is my response to someone who wants to get help, but finds that her insurance doesn’t cover psychiatric things:

    hi,

first, your english is perfect and i wouldn’t have known that you only started learning it 8 years ago.

second, i am glad that you are alive. we are all going to pass from this life, but it should not be because of our doing. while i was at the height of my depression, i was in soooooo much pain. i was complaining to a friend. he told me “at least you’re alive to feel it”.

hmmm. i guess being alive means that one feels ALL emotions. we cannot always be happy all the time. i think the worse we feel while depressed only makes the happier times even more happier .. you know what i mean? those times are even happier because you can compare it to the worst of the worst feelings.

money/coverage is always a problem with treating depression - even if you have the best insurance. i’m paying out of pocket for my therapist and psychiatrist. i see my psych once every 3 months now and my therapist every week. i do have to say that she is worth every $$$. i was lucky in that i felt comfortable with the first one i visited. for me, a combo between meds and good a therapist really helped.

as for your husband, there are support groups out there for people who has a loved one with depression. one can usually find those at a local clinic or hospital. i believe that they are usually free to join. also, now that he is aware of your condition, i suggest that he should understand the problems with motivation … so he can practice more patience.

here’s a list that might help you verbalize your support needs: click here

as for you, you might ask to see if there are clinics that offer discounted therapy sessions. maybe your general practitioner can suggest someone more affordable. call psychiatry offices for some referrals to lower cost therapists. visit the therapist according to how much you can afford. be sure to see one who helps usong cognitive behavior therapy (cbt) this is when they help you change behaviors and thought patterns that cause you more grief. under “why aren’t my …” read #4

you know … maybe the local county hospital has something affordable if not free…

have you told your husband that you are encouraged to take control of your depression for both you AND him? maybe that’s a good start when empathizing with what he has to go through.

    good luck to you

SHE RESPONDED BACK! TOTALLY MADE MY DAY!
