leadership in a changing world AND my suit

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

WOW. i am so glad i went to the women in business conference this morning in palo alto/menlo park. i had more energy this morning. i was probably just sad because my gramma was buried yesterday. i left the conference soo inspired! i’m really going to do this. i’m really gonna start my own business! one of the breakouts inspired me to look beyond the emeryville/san francisco area in offering my services. it’s inspired me to visualize an expansion and eventually have the financial freedom and knowledge to mentor others and start an organization which gives people tools so that they can create a better life for themselves and their children. i guess i just want to be able to affect people in positive ways! i can feel it. i can really feel this working and i can really see myself helping - especially women - better their lives. GOSH! SO EXCITED!

the only take away that i wanted to get was just to be / bet inspired. well, i was inspired alright!

i attended the following break outs:

Something from Nothing: A Primer for the Entrepreneur in YOU

definition of entrepreneur: someone who assumes the financial risk of the initiation, operation and management of a business.

ENTREpreneurs can start their own business as we know them to do or they can be INTRApreneurs in a company setting.

    the values that entrepreneurs are:

      1. CREATIVITY - this fuels innovation

      2. PASSION - more likely to work harder and inspire others with their “dream”

      3. PERSISTENCE - not easily deterred from their focus on producing results

      4. RESOURCEFULNESS - they find ways to get the money, the people, support to get things done

      5. LABILE LEARNER - learn from their mistake

Finance: Finding financial strategies that work

my question to a panel member was: at what point (net worth) should one acquire a financial consultant?

the answer: at day #1. they can help you in allocating your 401k. but once you have “surplus cash” is when you really need one.

by seeking early advice, you’re giving yourself a good start from the beginning. you will then have a solid base when you are REALLY talking business and looking to invest $50K or $100K+.

Afternoon Key Note Speaker

    1. if it’s worth doing, then it’s worth doing it right
    2. find a mentor
    3. trust your intuition - especially when we live in a world full of information

Rethinking Our Leadership: Choosing a More Authentic Path

    - we are born and raised with physical, mental, etc. boundaries. we need to get rid of them and think beyond them.
    - one should live a life with moments of joy

there are two types of problems that we encounter: technical and adaptive. a technical problem is usually easy and we usually now how to solve it. an adaptive problem is one that needs a new approach or a new way of thinking in order to solve it. this requires that we (1) unlearn some of our past practices - even if we’ve been successful at doing it. what’s the likelihood that a bad boss will change? probably zero because he became successful by doing what he’s been doing = being a bad boss. why should he change? (2) we should always challenge our beliefs (3) create compelling values, propositions or vision. one that inspire others to buy into it. (4) we have to deal with resistance. even our own. we have to challenge resistance (5) believe that’s it’s possible

    VISION

      - have a clear vision of the future. you have two choices. (1) create your own vision or (2) settle for someone else’s vision - take the vision that you’ve inherited.

      - why be resigned to doing something a certain way? there is no reason to.

      - ask yourself, what is my vision. this is my vision for myself: i want to lead people and by my leadership, i want to be able to affect their life in a positive way. i also want to give back to the community by helping to alleviate pain in the world. whether it be the pain of homelessness, poverty, pain inflicted by a culture, institutionalized pain… etc.

    COMMITMENT

      - commitment is the bridge to action. you can have the best vision, but it doesn’t mean anything if you don’t have the commitment to making it happen. think of what commitments you have to make. then in order to make your vision come to reality, do you have to have commitments with others through coordination? does a group have to make the same commitment.

    ACTION

      - take the action from your commitments and act on the ones that you can immediately take right now.

      - prioritize, but have the person who is accountable prioritize them

      - ask yourself what is missing that needs to be done

      - how can you supply what’s missing

      - set milestones with what and when - can be flexible

    POSSIBLE BELIEFS:
    1. i’ve only tapped into a small fraction of myself
    2. i am capable of success beyond what i have ever imagined
    3. i can make a difference on even the most adaptive problems

well, i don’t know if you found this abbreviated version inspiring, but maybe it gave you something to thing to think about. i really get off on things like these. OH! i ended up wearing a spring suit. MAN! i forgot how i felt in it. there’s something about a suit that gives you the feeling of power and confidence. it really made me feel nice. you know what though? i think that i have got to be one of the last females who still wear nylons (i wear nudes by donna karen - the BEST!) even with a pantsuit. i don’t know. for me, bare legs or foot is just unfinished. it’s just paying attention to details.

i was in such a good mood this morning that i even f*cked around and modeled for my FRENCHIE. i haven’t sent him these pictures, so maybe he’ll just see it here.
happy in my suithappy in my suithappy in my suithappy in my suit
