spider-bread 3, reading, yoshi and wasabi, amaYUCKY, hot fuzz and min

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

before i went out today, i spent some time with my dad. i popped open the DVD tour of paris that my FRENCHIE and i picked out at the louvre museum during my february 07 paris trip. he really enjoyed it. i think the parts that he enjoyed the most were probably the details that they showed on some of the buildings. i was telling him about some of the things i learned while there … like what 3eme arros. rue coypel meant and that all you have to do is look at the street signs which are usually on the buildings to find what area of paris you are in. my example is 3rd arrondesmont. that’s what that meant. arrondesmonts are areas in paris like those in LA … there’s silver lake, mt. washington, west LA, east LA or los feliz (i’m not sure about this one) - all still los angeles. and my dad and i also talked.

so i made it down to stevie-wonder-bread’s place. i was a bit late — oooops. we were suppose to watch spiderman 3. we watched it at the irvine spectrum. oh my goodness! it’s HUGE now. we decided to munch on movie munchies since neither of us ate any lunch. i had nachos and a cherry icee. he had a hot dog with nothing on it - GROSS — and some dipps - they are some ice cream type of thing.

so how did i like the movie? well, i would’ve enjoyed it more had my seat neighbors taken care of all the noise that their kids kept making… one kept talking and talking and talking … the other kept stomping her feet on the ground. i tried to be patient. i really did. then i asked her to “control” her little brats as we were all trying to enjoy the movie! i’m just kidding … i didn’t say it that way, but i wanted to … i wanted to say that if she wasn’t going to quiet them down, then i will. don’t think i was a bitch because after i told her that the rest of us are trying to enjoy the movie, her kids were seated and quiet! my goodness! and the dad just kinda sat there while the mom went up and down the stairs taking each child to the bathroom. what an ass. he wasn’t even helping … or he would tell his wife something something something and there she goes again … going out to do something. sucks for her that she has an unsupportive husband.they are his kids too.

oh, so back to the movie … the movie was alright. it was just okay for me. i wasn’t really left with a huge impression. but it was fun non-the-less because i got to hang out with stevie-wonder-bread. after the movie, we weren’t hungry anymore, so we went to barns and noble. he asked if i wanted to go look around at the shops … i’m like “no thank you.” we spent like two hours sitting there reading. i read a book on decorating and how to build a container garden while he read magazines on …. gadgets and electronics or something.

eight o’clock came and still we weren’t hungry, but we decided that we should grab a bite anyway. the wait at the restaurant was 45 minutes for two people, so i told him we should just hit the sushi place near his house. NOPE! we had to go to sushi wasabi. it’s a local place that’s unpretentious but with really really FRESH fish. in fact, the last time steve and i tried to go there… they were closed because they ran out of fish. the owner said they do that. tonight they were open to my disappointment because i saw a yoshinoya and i’m like “STEVE!!! i want yoshinoya!!!!” i do have to say that i am glad we had sushi. we sat at the bar and basically from what the sign said … they serve traditionally at the bar meaning that the sushi chef will just make anything he wants to make according to what types of fish he has. i had shrimp from boston, salmon from japan, salmon from i forgot, yellow tail from i forgot … baked scallops - YUMMY - i don’t remember the rest. all i know is that i forgot that i don’t like the sweat shrimp called amaebi. it’s jiggly and it’s got this coating on it that makes me want to gag! here’s a pictures:

nigiri amaebi

this one doesn’t look as good presentation wise and the one that i was served looked really pretty. so i didn’t think about it until i bit down. my gosh it jiggled in my mouth and it was like eating …. i can’t even describe it. well, i tried so hard to control my gag factor. i didn’t want to spit out shrimp and get scorned by the sushi chef, so i tucked it on the side of my mouth and bit into it and swallowed piece by piece with the hot tea. oh my gosh i was soooooooo dying! i shoved the second one to steve. he ate it and laughed at me… jerk!

i hope you are not laughing too… i can eat any type of sushi except for the amaebi. in fact, i eat the nigiri and sashimi without the soy sauce. i like tasting the fish. my personal belief is that only sissies use soy sauce. they have to hide the texture and the flavor with the overwhelming taste of the soy sauce + wasabi. just kidding … you’re not a sissie. but try it without dipping and see how much more you will appreciate the texture and flavor of each fish. i would suggest starting with tuna. it has an easier taste than salmon. if you are going to do this BE SURE IT’S NOT some hole in that wall that serves “tougher” fish.

oh! and this one tuna from … i don’t remember … just melted in your mouth. TUNA. yes. MELTED. i wouldn’t say it’s as heavenly as butter fish, but that tuna was 1/3 there. well, after we saw the bill, the thought of yoshinoya’s $6 or $7 beef bowls sounded really affordable. steve wanted to pay, but when i saw that our bill was $160 i insisted that we split it. so we did. that’s the bad thing about only eating nigiri is that you get two pieces and it’s already $5. that adds up. i’ve never spent that much in a jeans/t-shirt neighborhood restaurant before for two people. that reminds me of the time when my friend david who is a physician’s assistant came up to SF from LA. we met up at the ritz carlton to have some drinks … we ended ordering some sushi since the chef brought his little sushi cart to the lounge. don’t think cheap set up because … remember … this is the ritz carlton. we order lobster rolls and two other rolls and some unagi. one drink each. $100. we did get free peanuts though.

it was a lot of fun. i started talking with my neighboring sushi mate and the chef and the wife and we had a blast … NO ALCOHOL TOO!

once we got back to stevie-wonder-bread’s place, i decided that i wasn’t going to come up because i needed to wake up hella early for brunch in the LBC. i was kinda bummed because we were going to play video games. he has the new wii and he’s got a game where you play a guitar. maybe next time… i always have fun with steve. i’m glad we’ve remained friends.

got home at 10 and watched movie trailers with my dad to see what he wanted to watch. i suggested the two foreign films that i’ve seen … i thought he might enjoy the lives of others since it’s about german spies … he used to read a lot of spy novels. his author is ken follet - who also became my author when i first read the man from st. petersberg. after that … i was hooked. i read 16 books in 9 months. i used to just sit there and get lost in the story. they were all set during world war 2. his books were loosely written with a lot of history entwined in it. i guess i was running away from my life back then so i lived in another world. i really enjoyed that world. i stopped reading when the depression got really bad. i don’t know why.

i was surprised though with the thirst i had for reading. it had been a long time since i’ve done anything like that. as a little girl, that’s all i like to do was read. i especially like VC Andrews’ books and the camby hall girls series. that last one was about these college girls and i used to dream that it would be sooo cool to be a college girl. to have dorm-mates who later become your best friend.

oh, getting too long. my dad didn’t want to watch either of the foreign films. he said he didn’t want to have to read the sub-titles. i called him lazy. we’re going to watch hot fuzz instead. it’s a slapstick comedy. i’m going to pick him up from home after i have brunch with my friend who we will call MIN-MAY. that’s not her real name, but it’s something that i call her. the name is actually from a cartoon from the early 80’s that my siblings and i would watch while eating breakfast, before leaving for school. what was that cartoon called …. it wasn’t G-Force …. it’s set in outer space too though. it was japanese …. oh well… OH! so i’m having brunch with her and her family.

here’s a picture of us at the ranger’s stadium in dallas during one of our national sales meeting. our regional manager got us all tickets at the last minute.

min-may

my gosh this is so long ago … i think i was probably 26 here. making her 29 in this picture.
