growing up backwards in north carolina, intolerance = uneducated, racist = uneducated

continued

once JEFF got done, i said starbucks or jamba juice. he said no and said we should do local so we went to the locally owned roma café. he paid for my ice blended latte which i didn’t like to which he said he’s from the south to which i said that i feel funny when people spend money on me and we are in the west.

that brought up the interesting conversation about his growing up in north carolina and how he never met anyone asian except for a half japanese kid. weird. he’d never had sushi, indian, real mexican, korean, thai food since moving to seattle for grad school. he said i probably thought he was … this and that and that and this. i kept saying no. but when he said the word “backwards” i looked up. i didn’t say it. he did. i’m so glad i grew up in california. oh yeah, he said that north carolina contributed more fighters to the confederate cause than any other state in the south. i wonder if it NC just had more people living there.

he went to udub - university of washington for grad school so perhaps he finished his phd there. he was a scientist in research at a biotech doing protein folding. i asked how it felt to go from a red state to a blue one. he said that the liberalism was very tangible. i don’t quite understand how tangible is was but he likened it to going to dallas or san antonio. i’ve been to both and i still can’t fully touch what he meant. he said that in his school, 30% were african american and the only time you would see inter-racial dating was with the caucasian girls from “the north” like new york city. weird. all but three of my boyfriends were of the same race as me. after his divorce, he dated a korean girl who was born and raised there til she moved here at 10. JEFF said that he was always afraid of bringing her home because he was scared that there might/would be too many offensive things that she might encounter like racist remarks not about her, but about “other” people. in fact, he’s never seen an asian girl until he moved to seattle!

his views of the world changed rather quickly. we guessed it because of his increased exposure. it is known that the more educated (he’s getting his law degree now), cultured and travelled (he’s in SF now after seattle and texas) a person is, the more liberal/accepting/tolorant they become. it’s hard not to realize that there is sooo much more out there than just your way of living and the little world - or country - that you live in. lucky him he’s no longer “backwards.”

isn’t it interesting how all the horrific things that happen in the world is because of the people who think that their way is the best and only way, so they have to force it upon other people? this creates victims and factions of those who fight back thus creating a huge never ending circle of violence and pain and hurt and …. all through out the earth’s history.
