consider these when you think your medication failed and before you decide to quit taking them.
- 1. how long were you on each medication? you have to be on each for at least one month to see full efficacy. these are not like tylenol where it takes only an hour to see full efficacy.
2. did you follow up with your doctor and adjust the dose and find a balance between efficacy vs. side-effects that’s tailored to you?
3. cymbalta, wellbutrin, zoloft, lexapro … etc. do different things. did your doctor give you a combo of these or other antidepressants to tailor your treatment according to your depression?
- wellbutrin - gives you “energy”
- zoloft - keeps you from dropping down
- cymbalta - helps keep you from dropping down AND helps with the physical pains seen in depression.
4. and if all of the above was done, did you shop for a therapist for psychotherapy like CBT? it’s been studied that meds work better with therapy. here’s why:

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is based on the concept that changing negative thinking patterns and behavior can have a powerful effect on a person’s emotions. CBT helps identify, analyze and change counter-productive thoughts and behaviors, which helps to alleviate feelings of depression and anxiety.
How does Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy work?
Extensive scientific research has shown that changing the way a person thinks and behaves can have a profound effect on one’s emotional state. CBT utilizes a very directive, action-oriented approach which teaches a person to explore, identify and analyze dysfunctional patterns of thinking and acting. Once these counterproductive patterns are identified, the therapist instructs the patient how to challenge and restructure their behavior and thinking. Behavior becomes based on rational, reality-based thinking. Negative emotional states such as depression and anxiety are soon alleviated.

4. CAN I DRINK ALCOHOL WITH MY ANTI-DEPRESSANTS :: DRUG-DRUG INTERACTION -defined

alcohol + antidepressants = not a good combination
1. alcohol lowers the efficacy of your antidepressants
2. both are eliminated through the ’same way’ in our body. hence a negative drug-drug interaction
let’s see what happens when there is a negative drug-drug interaction:
your body is the house. Mr. Alcohol and Mr. Drug are your guests, but now that it’s late, it’s time to go home so you can sleep. there is only one door that leads to your front yard. this door can only let one person through every … let’s say 2 hours.
so now you have Mr. A and Mr. D inside your house. they both want to go outside to the yard. but only one can go through. so now you have both of your visitors competing to for the door.
for this scenario, Mr. D has bigger muscles so he’s able to push Mr. A to the couch, exit and go home.
Mr. A is left inside the house, so you get drunk faster.
or if Mr. A had bigger muscles, then Mr. D would be left in the house and you would have an increase in the amount of side-effects, which will be worse than the side-effects you are currently experiencing.
5. PATIENT DRUG ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
